Conventional management includes advice to stay active and continue daily activities; exercise therapy; analgesics (e.g. paracetamol, NSAIDs, an opioid); muscle relaxants.

There is substantial research to show that acupuncture is significantly better than no treatment.  It is at least as good, if not better than, standard medical care for back pain and sciatica.

Acupuncture can help relieve back pain and sciatica by:

  • stimulating nerves located in muscles and other tissues, which leads to release of endorphins
  • reducing inflammation
  • improving muscle stiffness and joint mobility
  • causing a transient change in sciatic nerve blood flow,
  • increasing levels of serotonin and noradrenaline
  • promoting regeneration of the sciatic nerve

Acupuncture works on different pathways

The pathways which acupuncture uses are myriad, and in any 1 person or medical condition the pathways will be different.  So we urge people to try treatment at least 6 times for their condition before evaluating.  The outcomes for different conditions and different people makes it impossible to predict how any one person will respond.
